HowTo Install OpenJDK on CentOS 5.5 (DRAFT)

1. Introduction

CentOS 5.3 is the first version of CentOS to include OpenJDK. This HowTo will explain how to install and configure OpenJDK on CentOS.

2. Licensing Issues

This section will briefly discuss OpenJDK licensing issues.

3. Alternative Java Implementations

This section will cover Java alternatives for CentOS and will at least cover GCJ and mention the previous HowTo HowTos/JavaOnCentOS that covers installing Sun and IBM JDKs.

4. Basic Installation

This section will cover the basic installation of OpenJDK.

/!\ For this draft HowTo, I am planning on documenting my experience installing OpenJDK and Tomcat and deploying a Grails application using CentOS 5.5. I will not have time to test on CentOS 5.3. In fact, I'm not even sure at this point that I won't be forced to switch to the Oracle version of the JDK.

5. Browser Configuration

This section will cover how to get OpenJDK working with Firefox, etc.

6. Developer Tools

This section will cover installing eclipse and other developer tools. May link to other HowTos in the future.

7. Server Tools

This section will cover installing Tomcat and other server-side tools. May link to other HowTos in the future.
